For those in the market for new air conditioners, there are a lot of factors to consider. One of the important things to take into account is the SEER rating of a particular unit.

What Does SEER Mean?

This acronym stands for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.” This ratio is calculated by figuring out the cooling capacity of a unit during a typical cooling season and dividing it by the electrical input used during that same time. Higher SEER ratings translate into greater efficiency. Since it’s a ratio, even a difference of two can make a significant impact in lowering monthly utility bills.

What SEER Rating Is Ideal?

There’s no set level for an ideal SEER rating. The minimum level in many regions is 14. SEER ratings can go up to 21, thanks to advancements in engineering. To achieve these high-efficiency levels, most modern units have two different modes. They can use the low mode during a regular basis to conserve energy, with the high mode being used during a bigger need for air conditioning. In Biloxi, it does get quite hot, so you might see those high modes kicking in more often than in other regions.

It’s important to remember that many older air conditioning units function just fine. Their SEER ratings may only be at an 8, for example, but that doesn’t mean you need to immediately upgrade them in favor of a more efficient unit. If it’s been about 10 years since your air conditioner was installed, though, or if you’re experiencing significant issues with your unit, it may be time to think about replacing it.
